Twenty-five years ago, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was signed and adopted by 189 Member States at the Fourth World Conference on Women in China. Unmatched in its scope and comprehensiveness, the landmark text symbolized a global awakening to the important role of women. Twenty-five years later, the advancement of women is still key to all aspects of an equitable, peaceful and sustainable society. While the Beijing Declaration remains to be the most comprehensive global policy framework for action, leaders of the 21st century recognize that continuous efforts need to be made to preserve previous success and achieve future developmental goals.
The year of 2020 marks the 75th birthday of the United Nations and the 10-year mark of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As nations fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and rebuild weakened economies, now more than ever, the world needs leaders in sustainable development, with an unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment.
WWO is proud to host the celebration of the 25th anniversary in partnership with Malaysia Foreign Friendship Alliance and Shanghai UN Research Association. The Summit will bring together government leaders, international stakeholders and representatives from various sectors to have a candid conversation on their renewed commitment to gender equality, assessing the achievements made since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and noting room for improvement. In the face of new threats to the growth and prosperity of women, the Summit will restore the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and set a new direction for the empowerment of women to fight against the COVID-19.
